The film also portrays the devastating effects of the gas leak on the health and environment of Bhopal. According to various estimates, the gas leak killed at least 15,000 people and injured more than half a million. [1] [2] The immediate cause of death was due to choking, circulatory collapse and pulmonary edema (filling up of fluid in the lungs). [3] Many survivors suffered from respiratory problems, eye irritation or blindness, skin diseases, neurological disorders, reproductive issues, birth defects and cancers. [4] The gas leak also contaminated the soil and water sources in and around the plant, posing long-term health risks to the local population and wildlife. [5]
The film also exposes the legal and political battles that followed the disaster. The victims and activists demanded justice and compensation from Union Carbide Corporation (UCC), the American parent company of Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL), which owned and operated the plant. However, UCC denied its responsibility and liability for the disaster, claiming that it was an act of sabotage by a disgruntled employee. [6] UCC also argued that it had no direct control over UCIL, which was a separate legal entity. [7] In 1989, UCC agreed to pay $470 million as a full and final settlement to the Indian government, which was supposed to distribute it among the victims. However, many victims and activists criticized the settlement as inadequate and unfair, and challenged it in various courts. [8]
The film also highlights the ongoing struggle of the survivors and activists for a clean-up of the plant site and its surroundings, which remain polluted and hazardous even after three decades. UCC sold its stake in UCIL to another Indian company in 1994, and washed its hands off the site. [9] In 2001, UCC was acquired by Dow Chemical Company, which also refused to take any responsibility for the disaster or its aftermath. [10] The Indian government and the state government of Madhya Pradesh have also failed to ensure proper remediation and rehabilitation of the affected areas and people. [11] The survivors and activists have been campaigning for a comprehensive health care system, economic and social support, environmental remediation, corporate accountability and criminal justice for the disaster.
